ASP.NET MVC 3 Hosting - ASPHostPortal :: Handling Forms in Spring 3.0 MVC

clock April 11, 2011 05:55 by author Jervis

Getting Started

Let us add the contact form to our Spring 3 MVC Hello World application. Open the index.jsp file and change it to following:

File: WebContent/index.jsp

<jsp:forward page="contacts.html"></jsp:forward>

The above code will just redirect the user to contacts.html page.

The View- contact.jsp

Create a JSP file that will display Contact form to our users.
File: /WebContent/WEB-INF/jsp/contact.jsp

<%@taglib uri="http://www.springframework.org/tags/form" prefix="form"%>
<html>
<head>
    <title>Spring 3 MVC Series - Contact Manager</title>
</head>
<body>
<h2>Contact Manager</h2>
<form:form method="post" action="addContact.html">

    <table>
    <tr>
        <td><form:label path="firstname">First Name</form:label></td>
        <td><form:input path="firstname" /></td>
    </tr>
    <tr>
        <td><form:label path="lastname">Last Name</form:label></td>
        <td><form:input path="lastname" /></td>
    </tr>
    <tr>
        <td><form:label path="lastname">Email</form:label></td>
        <td><form:input path="email" /></td>
    </tr>
    <tr>
        <td><form:label path="lastname">Telephone</form:label></td>
        <td><form:input path="telephone" /></td>
    </tr>
    <tr>
        <td colspan="2">
            <input type="submit" value="Add Contact"/>
        </td>
    </tr>
</table>

</form:form>
</body>
</html>

Here in above JSP, we have displayed a form. Note that the form is getting submitted to addContact.html page.

Adding Form and Controller in Spring 3

We will now add the logic in Spring 3 to display the form and fetch the values from it. For that we will create two java files. First the Contact.java which is nothing but the form to display/retrieve data from screen and second the ContactController.java which is the spring controller class.

File: net.viralpatel.spring3.form.Contact

package net.viralpatel.spring3.form;

public class Contact {

    private String firstname;
    private String lastname;
    private String email;
    private String telephone;

    //.. getter and setter for all above fields.

}

The above file is the contact form which holds the data from screen. Note that I haven’t showed the getter and setter methods. You can generate these methods by pressiong Alt + Shift + S, R.

File: net.viralpatel.spring3.controller.ContactController

package net.viralpatel.spring3.controller;

import net.viralpatel.spring3.form.Contact;

import org.springframework.stereotype.Controller;
import org.springframework.validation.BindingResult;
import org.springframework.web.bind.annotation.ModelAttribute;
import org.springframework.web.bind.annotation.RequestMapping;
import org.springframework.web.bind.annotation.RequestMethod;
import org.springframework.web.bind.annotation.SessionAttributes;
import org.springframework.web.servlet.ModelAndView;

@Controller
@SessionAttributes
public class ContactController {

    @RequestMapping(value = "/addContact", method = RequestMethod.POST)
    public String addContact(@ModelAttribute("contact")
                            Contact contact, BindingResult result) {

        System.out.println("First Name:" + contact.getFirstname() +
                    "Last Name:" + contact.getLastname());

        return "redirect:contacts.html";
    }

    @RequestMapping("/contacts")
    public ModelAndView showContacts() {

        return new ModelAndView("contact", "command", new Contact());
    }
}

In above controller class, note that we have created two methods with Request Mapping /contacts and /addContact. The method showContacts() will be called when user request for a url contacts.html. This method will render a model with name “contact”. Note that in the ModelAndView object we have passed a blank Contact object with name “command”. The spring framework expects an object with name command if you are using
in your JSP file.

Also note that in method addContact() we have annotated this method with RequestMapping and passed an attribute method=”RequestMethod.POST”. Thus the method will be called only when user generates a POST method request to the url /addContact.html. We have annotated the argument Contact with annotation @ModelAttribute. This will binds the data from request to the object Contact. In this method we just have printed values of Firstname and Lastname and redirected the view to cotnacts.html.

That’s all folks

The form is completed now. Just run the application in eclipse by pression Alt + Shift + X, R. It will show the contact form. Just enter view values and press Add button. Once you press the button, it will print the firstname and lastname in sysout logs.

ASP.NET MVC 3 Hosting - ASPHostPortal :: Tutorial - Getting Started with Spring 3 MVC

clock April 6, 2011 06:16 by author Jervis

The Spring Framework is constantly evolving. Spring MVC has gotten easier and easier to work with and with the SpringSource Tool Suite it gets even easier to get a Spring MVC project up and running. Today I’ll show you how to setup a simple Spring MVC project and add some simple functionality to it.

There are a few things you’ll need to complete this tutorial:

Java JDK installed
SpringSource Tool Suite – I downloaded the installer version, not the plug-in to Eclipse

With those two items installed and ready go ahead and run the SpringSource Tool Suite and create a new project: File -> New -> Spring Template Project

Note: It might prompt you to download the template, go ahead and let it do that.

Once the project has been created we can test out the default Hello World code that is already in-place. Lets add the project to the
SpringSource tc Server and then start it.

Once the SpringSource tc Server is up and running open a browser and head to this url:
http://localhost:8080/EchoSpringMVC/

If everything went well you should see this:

You can leave the SpringSource tc Server running.

Open the HomeController.java file now and add the following imports:

import org.springframework.web.bind.annotation.RequestParam;
import org.springframework.ui.Model;

Lets add a new mapping and method for the echo functionality we are going to add.

@RequestMapping(value="/echo", method=RequestMethod.GET)
public String echo(@RequestParam("input1") String input1, Model model) {
    logger.info("Calling echo");
    String output = "Echo: " + input1;
    model.addAttribute("output", output);
    return "echo";
}

We set the mapping to handle any GET requests to echo. The echo method takes one parameter called input1 which we simply use to complete the echo functionality. The echo is passed back to the view (which we will create next).

Your HomeController.java should look like this:

package com.giantflyingsaucer.springmvc;

import org.slf4j.Logger;
import org.slf4j.LoggerFactory;
import org.springframework.stereotype.Controller;
import org.springframework.web.bind.annotation.RequestMapping;
import org.springframework.web.bind.annotation.RequestMethod;
import org.springframework.web.bind.annotation.RequestParam;
import org.springframework.ui.Model;

/**
 * Handles requests for the application home page.
 */
@Controller
public class HomeController {

    private static final Logger logger = LoggerFactory.getLogger(HomeController.class);

      /**
     * Simply selects the home view to render by returning its name.
     */
    @RequestMapping(value="/", method=RequestMethod.GET)
    public String home() {
        logger.info("Welcome home!");
        return "home";
    }

    @RequestMapping(value="/echo", method=RequestMethod.GET)
    public String echo(@RequestParam("input1") String input1, Model model) {
        logger.info("Calling echo");
        String output = "Echo: " + input1;
        model.addAttribute("output", output);
        return "echo";
    }
}

Lets add a new JSP page for our echo view. Right-click on the webapp/WEB-INF/views folder and select:
New -> Other -> Web -> JSP File

Here are the contents for the new echo.jsp file:

<%@ taglib uri="http://java.sun.com/jsp/jstl/core" prefix="c" %>
<%@ page session="false" %>
<html>
<head>
    <title>Echo</title>
</head>
<body>
<h1>
    <strong><c:out value="${output}"></c:out></strong>
</h1>
</body>
</html>

Save all the files and the SpringSource tc Server will reload the project automatically. When this has happened use this URL to trigger the echo: http://localhost:8080/EchoSpringMVC/echo?input1=HelloWorld

Your result should be:

ASP.NET MVC 3 Hosting - ASPHostPortal :: Problem in implementing IControllerActivator in ASP.NET MVC 3

clock April 5, 2011 07:30 by author Jervis

ASP.NET MVC 3 introduces two new interfaces to allow simple integration of IoC containers into the MVC pipeline, allowing many different types to be resolved using your IoC container of choice. These interfaces are IDependencyResolver and IControllerActivator but before you go ahead and implement both, let’s take a look at whether they are both actually needed.

First some background

If you wanted to inject dependencies into your controllers in ASP.NET MVC 2, you were required to either implement IControllerFactory or subclass DefaultControllerFactory. Typically, you would pass your IoC container into the constructor of your custom controller factory and use it to resolve the controller in the CreateController method. You may also have added custom code in ReleaseController to clean up dependencies

This worked reasonably well, but in ASP.NET MVC 3 things have changed so we can use DI for a whole host of other objects such as filters and view engines

The new interface that we should implement is IDependencyResolver:

The important thing about your implementation of this interface is that it should return null if it cannot resolve a particular object. Below is a simple implementation using Unity:

When an MVC application starts for the first time, the dependency resolver is called with the following types in the following order:
- IControllerFactory
- IControllerActivator
- HomeController
….

If you do not implement IControllerFactory or IControllerActivator, then the MVC framework will try to get the controller from the DependencyResolver itself. As a side note, there is no need to worry about performance (regarding so many calls to the resolver) because MVC will only try to resolve theIControllerFactory and IControllerActivator once on startup and if no implementations are registered then it will subsequently always query the DependencyResolver first

The MVC framework goes on to try to resolve many other types which you probably have not implemented or registered with your IoC container, but as long as your dependency resolver returns null if the type is not registered, MVC will default back to the built-in implementations

If you did not implement your resolver to return null if a type is not registered then you will probably end up seeing an error similar to:

The current type, System.Web.Mvc.IControllerFactory, is an interface and cannot be constructed

The other important thing to note is that both methods on this interface take in the actual service type. This typically means that when you register your controllers with your IoC container, you should only specify the concrete type, not the IController, interface

i.e. using Unity as an example:

rather than:

Failing to register your controllers conrrectly and you will see

No parameterless constructor defined for this object

So at this stage, we have an implementation of IDependencyResolver and nothing else and yet our controller are all resolving correctly. It makes you wonder about whether IControllerActivator is really needed…

About IControllerActivator

IControllerActivator was introduced with ASP.NET MVC 3 to split the functionality of the MVC 2 controller factory into two distinct classes. As far as we can tell, this was done to adhere to the Single Responsibility Principle (SRP). So now in MVC 3, the DefaultControllerFactory outsources the responsibility of actually instantiating the controller to the controller activator. The single method interface is shown below:

If you implement this interface and register your activator with your IoC container, the MVC framework will pick it up and use it when trying to instantiate controllers, but you have to wonder why you would do this instead of just letting your dependency resolver do it directly. Brad Wilson to the rescue:

“If your container can build arbitrary types, you don’t need to write activators. The activator services are there for containers that can’t be arbitrary types. MEF can’t, but you can add [Export] attributes to your controllers to allow MEF to build them…”

This means that if you are working with any competent IoC container* (Castle Windor, Unity, Ninject, StructureMap, Autofac et al), IControllerActivator is not needed and offers no benefit over allowing your DependencyResolver to instantiate your controllers.

* (With the exception of MEF which isn’t an IoC container any way)

So we now know that we are probably not required to implement this interface, but are there any benefits to doing so? Something that we have seen mentioned (we cannot remember where) is that implementing IControllerActivator allows you you can provide a more meaningful error message if resolution fails. It is true that the message you would get otherwise (No parameterless constructor defined for this object) is not 100% clear, but we are not sure that this justifies another class just for this purpose. Surely, once you have seen this message, the next time you encounter, it you will immediately know what the problem is. Even if you do implement IControllerActivator, you will not have access to the (normally) detailed message that you IoC container provides when resolution fails, so you can do little more than say resolution failed – i don’t know why.

Conclusion

So, should you implement IControllerActivator? Probably not. If you are using pretty much any well known IoC container, just implement IDependencyResolver and it will do everything for you. There is also no need for a custom implementation of IControllerFactory. If you are worried about the lack of release method on the dependency resolver, don’t be. The worst case scenario requires a small change to the way that you are using your IoC container. Next time we will talk about how to make sure your dependency resolver plays nicely with IDisposable.

ASP.NET 4 Hosting - ASPHostPortal :: 404 Not Found Error Resolution

clock March 29, 2011 06:35 by author Jervis

Error Message:

404 Not Found error messages are often customized by each website, especially very large ones, so keep in mind that this error may present itself in more ways than the common ones listed below

- "404 Error"
-"Page cannot be displayed"
-"Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage"
-"404: Not Found"
-"The page cannot be found"
-"Error 404: NOT FOUND"
-"HTTP 404 - File not found"
-"Not Found"

The 404 Not Found error displays inside the Internet browser window, just as web pages do.

Solution

1. Retry the web page by clicking the refresh/reload button or trying the URL from the address bar again. The 404 Not Found error has been known to appear on occasion even if there is no real issue so a simple refresh will often load the page you were looking for.

2. Check for errors in the URL. Often times the 404 Not Found error appears because the URL was typed wrong or the link that was clicked on points to the wrong URL.

3. Move up one directory level at a time in the URL until you find something. For example, if www.w.com/a/b/c.htm gave you the 404 Not Found error, move up to www.w.com/a/b/. If you get nothing here, move up to www.w.com/a/. This should lead you toward what you're looking for or at least confirm that it's no longer available.

4. If you move all the way up to the website's main page, try to run a search for the information you're looking for. If a search function isn't available, try finding your information by using links from this page to dig deeper into the site.

5. Test the page at downforeveryoneorjustme.com. Just enter the webpage in this online tool and it will tell you just that - if the site is down for everyone, or if the problem is on your end somewhere.

ASP.NET 4 Hosting - ASPHostPortal :: Better View State Management in ASP.NET 4.0

clock March 28, 2011 07:29 by author Jervis

ASP.NET is a great platform to develop any web applications. From ASP.NET 1.1 we are having one feature called View State which store the data in hidden field during page post back. Any Serializable data can be stored in View State. It’s scope is limited to page post backs.View state is great if you use it wisely otherwise it may create problem with performance page. I have seen that there were some page which contains lots of view state. It will increase your Kilo bytes of page and increase page rendering time.

In ASP.NET 4.0 we have more control over maintaining view state for page let’s see how we can manage View State more efficiently in asp.net 4.0. In the earlier version of asp.net we have View State optional that means we can turn View State view EnableViewState property. If we made it true then it will enabled other wise it will be disabled for that page. All controls that are derived from control class will have EnableViewstate property. Now in earlier version of ASP.NET this property will be ignored for the child controls. For example if you enabled this property for page and now you have three textboxes on page then that textbox’s value will be stored in View State regardless of textbox’s EnableViewState Property is true or not.

But with ASP.NET 4.0 things are different with respect to above scenario. Now we have one more property called ViewStateMode Property. This property help us greatly in managing View State. It has there values Enabled,Disabled,Inherit. With this property you can enable View State of control even if View State is disabled. So now we will have facility to turn off the View State of parent controls like page and then we can decide which control will have View State enabled.

In ASP.NET 4.0 ViewStateMode property will accept following values.

- Enabled - This will enable View State for particular control and also for any child control which have ‘Inherit’ value for this property or nothing set for this property.

- Disabled- This will disable View State for that particular control.

- Inherit- This will specify that control will use the parent control ViewStateMode property.

Hope this will help you understanding View State Management in ASP.NET 4.0.

ASP.NET 4 Hosting - ASPHostPortal :: Extensible Output Caching with ASP.NET 4 (VS 2010 and .NET 4.0 Series)

clock March 24, 2011 07:08 by author Jervis

Output Caching Today

ASP.NET 1.0 introduced the concept of output caching, which enables developers to capture and store the generated output of pages, controls, controllers, and HTTP responses in an in-memory cache.  On subsequent web requests, ASP.NET can then serve content faster by retrieving and using the generated output from the cache instead of having to execute the page/controller to regenerate the output from scratch.  This can dramatically improve the performance of your application – especially in cases where your content is based on data within a database (since when the content is output cached you end up not having to hit the database on subsequent requests).

ASP.NET’s output caching system is flexible enough to enable you to cache different versions of content depending on the querystring/form-post parameters to a page/controller (for example: Browse.aspx?category=Beverages versus. Browse.aspx?category=Meat).  It also enables you to cache different versions based on the browser type or user-language preference of the client visiting your application. This allows you to cache a mobile version of a page separate from a version optimized for a desktop browser, as well as to vary the cache entries based on whether the user wants to read a page in English or French.  You can configure ASP.NET to cache a particular output cache entry for a specific period of time (for example: 1 minute – after which the next request will regenerate the content and cache it again).  You can also configure ASP.NET to dynamically invalidate a cache entry based on an external event (for example: if the database upon which the cached content depends changes).

One limitation of output caching with ASP.NET V1->V3.5, though, is that the cache store itself is not extensible – and the cached content always has to be stored in-memory.

ASP.NET 4 Output Cache Extensibility

ASP.NET 4 adds an extensibility point to output caching that now enables developers to configure one or more custom output-cache providers. Output-cache providers can use any storage mechanism to persist output cached content. This makes it possible to easily create output-cache providers that store the cached content using any persistence mechanism – including local or remote disks, databases, cloud storage, and distributed cache engines (like memcached or velocity).

You can create a custom output-cache provider by creating a class that derives from the new System.Web.Caching.OutputCacheProvider class in ASP.NET 4.  Within your derived class you then override 4 public methods that provide implementations for adding/removing/retrieving/updating cached content (a unique key is passed to identify each separate cached entry).  You can then configure ASP.NET 4 to use your custom outputcache provider by registering it using the new <providers> subsection of the <outputCache> element within an application’s web.config file:

Above I’ve added a new output cache provider (which I’ve named “SampleCache”) that is implemented using the “ScottOutputCache” class within my OutputCacheSample.dll assembly.  I’ve also configured ASP.NET to use my “SampleCache” implementation as the default output cache implementation whenever content is output cached – this is done by setting the “defaultProvider” attribute on the <outputCache> element.

And now, when I add an OutputCache directive to the top of any of .aspx page the content will be cached and stored using my ScottOutputCache provider:

<%@ OutputCache Duration="60" VaryByParam="None"  %>

Likewise, if I add an [OutputCache] attribute on any action method within an ASP.NET MVC Controller the content will also be cached and stored using my ScottOutputCache provider:

Customizing Which Output Cache Provider is Used

Above I configured ASP.NET to by default always cache content using my “SampleCache” provider whenever output caching is used within the application.

As a slightly more advanced option, developers can also configure ASP.NET to dynamically choose which output cache provider to use on a per-request basis.  This is useful for scenarios where you want to have a slightly richer set of cache semantics. For example, you might want to cache the “Home” page or "Top 10" requested pages of a site using the built-in ASP.NET in-memory provider (which will be super fast because the content will be in-memory), and then cache less frequently requested pages that get lower traffic on disk.

You can dynamically indicate which output cache provider to use on a per-request basis by overriding the GetOutputCacheProviderName() method within the Global.asax file of an application.  Below I’m indicating that for the “Home.aspx” page within my application I want to use the built-in in-memory ASP.NET output cache provider – and that I then want to use whatever is registered within the web.config file for every other request:

This ability to easily switch between providers depending on scenarios ends up enabling a bunch of really powerful scenarios.

Common Output Cache Providers

We’ll be shipping samples that demonstrate how to implement a disk-based output cache provider that stores cached content on the file-system.  We’ll also be shipping samples that demonstrate how to integrate output caching with the new Windows Server AppFabric Caching Service (formerly known as “Velocity”).  AppFabric’s caching service will be a free, fully supported, Microsoft distributed cache system.  It will also be easy to use the new ASP.NET 4 output caching extensibility with
memcached – a popular open source distributed caching system.

You can learn more about how to create providers by watching Stefan Schackow’s
ASP.NET 4 Core Runtime talk at PDC 2009.  You can also learn more about AppFabric’s Caching service from this PDC 2009 talk.

Summary

The addition of output-cache provider extensibility to ASP.NET 4 enables developers to easily pursue more aggressive and more intelligent output-caching strategies for web sites and applications.  These can significantly improve the performance and responsiveness of applications, and improve both end-user experiences as well as reduce the amount of server resources required.

Hope this helps.

ASP.NET 4 Hosting - ASPHostPortal :: How to Deploy ASP.NET Web Application on the Server

clock March 21, 2011 05:53 by author Jervis

We can deploy ASP.NET Application in  3 different ways

1. xCopy Deployment
2. Precompiled Deployment
3. Web Setup Project

The choice of best deployment alternative depends upon particular need of each application. Xcopy deployment is the most easiest, and it is often used during development to create copies of an application n different servers for testing purpose. For small application xcopy deployment may be the best choice.

Precompiled deployment has several advantages over XCopy deployment. Eg. Precompiled deployment is always gives better performance for the first users of the site at the same time it is more secure as we don’t need to copy our source code files on to server. If our application deployed on one or few servers then precompiled deployment is usually best choice.

When we are going to deploy our application on number of servers then creating a setup program is a very handy tool. Although creating this setup program is much tedious and involves considerable working, the deployment from this setup program becomes very easier.

xCopy Deployment

To manually copy the files of an asp.net web site to a server. We can use the xcopy command from a command prompt. Then we can use IIS’s (Internet Information Serve management console t o create a virtual directory that’s mapped to the directory that you copied the web site to.

It is easier to create a batch file for the xcopy command. Then after we can run that batch file at given time we make changes to the application and want to deploy the updated code.

We can also perform xcopy deployment from visual studio by using copy website command.

To perform xcopy we use copy web site command. This command lets us to copy website to file system, local IIS, FTP or remote IIS website. At the same time we can copy all or selected files.

How to use this command

1. Deploys precompiled assemblies to the specific server
2. Lets us to deploy the web site without source code files
3. It is done either from publish web site command or from command prompt using the aspnet_compiler command

Advantages

1. Avoids delays caused by compiling web pages when they are first accessed by a user.
2. Finds compile errors before the site is deployed.
3. Can copy just executable files and not the source files to the server.

The build -> publish web site command compiles all of the files makes up an asp.net application, and then deploys the compiled assemblies to the location we specify.

If we check allow precompiled site to be updatable box, the source files are deployed along with the executable files. If we uncheck then source code files aren’t deployed.

The syntax of aspnet_compiler command
The aspnet_compiler command is located in the asp.net framework directory,
c:\WINDOWS\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v2.0.50727

aspnet_compiler –v virtual-directory [-u] [-d] [-f] [target-directory]

where

* -v name of virtual directory of existing web site
* -u precompiled website will be updated
* -d debug information is included in compiled assemblies
* -f overwrite target directory if exist

Eg.
Precomplies existing website
Aspnet_compiler –v test d:\test

In same place
Aspnet_complier –v test

With debugging information
Aspnet_compiler –v test –u –d d:\test

If we specify target directory the precompiled web site is stored in the specified directory else the website is precompiled in place

Setup Deployment

1. It uses a web setup project to build a windows setup program used to deploy website onto server.

2. Useful for deployment on multiple servers.
3. Can be used to deploy precompiled assemblies and can be configured to include or omit the source code.
4. The installed application can be removed by using add or remove programs dialog box from control panel

How to create a setup

Choose the file -> add -> new project command to display the add new project dialog box. Then, choose setup and deployment. Select web setup project as template, enter a name for websetup project click ok.

In the solution explorer right click the web setup project and choose the add-> project output command to display the add project output group dialog box, then click ok to add the content files from you website to the web setup project

Use the buttons that are displayed at the top of the solution explorer when web setup project is selected to access setup editors that lets us to customize various aspects of the web setup project.

Visual studio creates files named setup.exe and setup.msi. setup.exe is the file we will run to install the application and setup.msi contains all of the files to be installed.

The setup.exe and setup.msi files are stored in the web setup project’s debug or release folder.

ASP.NET 4 Hosting - ASPHostPortal :: CSS Friendly Menu Control in ASP.NET 4.0

clock February 1, 2011 06:49 by author Jervis

It is very much easier to apply CSS when we have ul,li elements as the HTML content. If we look into ASP.NET Menu Control till Version 3.5, its render as Table-TR-TD Tag. Though Table/Tr/Td is quite useful to display tabular data but sometime  creates  a big problem when we need to do more work with CSS. To overcome this problem we generally used CSS Friendly adapter to render the ASP.NET Control in ul/li mode.

ASP.NET 4.0 makes the things easier for web developer by providing “RenderingMode” properties. Here we can specify RenderMode of a ASP.NET Menu control. Which define the what will be the HTML Render Content Type. Bydefault mode is “List” which means control will be render as ul/li.

As per the above diagram we can see that there are three mode available. We can use any one of them as per the requirement.

Let’s see one small  example by using the ASP.Net menu web  control and check how it renders as HTML in ASP.Net 4.0.  Assume that we are having the following piece of code

<asp:Menu runat="server" ID="customeMenu" RenderingMode="List" >
            <Items>
                <asp:MenuItem Text="File" Value="File"></asp:MenuItem>
                <asp:MenuItem Text="Edit" Value="Edit"></asp:MenuItem>
                <asp:MenuItem Text="View" Value="View"></asp:MenuItem>
                <asp:MenuItem Text="WebSite" Value="WebSite"></asp:MenuItem>
            </Items>
        </asp:Menu>

This Menu control will be render as below html code  in  ASP.NET 4.0 as, we have mentioned “List” as the rendering mode.

<ul>
        <li><a  href="#">File</a></li>
        <li><a  href="#">Edit</a></li>
        <li><a  href="#">View</a></li>
        <li><a  href="#">WebSite</a></li>
    </ul>

To test the above scenario run the web application that contain the menu control and after page rendered complete Right Click on  view source of the aspx page. The output will be look like as bellow.

We can also generate the Menu Control as HTML Table like earlier version by using RenderingMode=”Table”.

So, for the same block of code,

<asp:Menu runat="server" ID="customeMenu" RenderingMode="Table" >
           <Items>
               <asp:MenuItem Text="File" Value="File"></asp:MenuItem>
               <asp:MenuItem Text="Edit" Value="Edit"></asp:MenuItem>
               <asp:MenuItem Text="View" Value="View"></asp:MenuItem>
               <asp:MenuItem Text="WebSite" Value="WebSite"></asp:MenuItem>
           </Items>
       </asp:Menu>

HTML Rendered output will be as follows

<table >
     <tr >
        <td><table>
             <tr>
                 <td >File</a></td>
             </tr>
         </table></td>
     </tr><tr>
         <td><table >
             <tr>
                 <td>Edit</a></td>
             </tr>
         </table></td>
     </tr><tr>
         <td><table >
             <tr>
                 <td >View</a></td>
             </tr>
         </table></td>
     </tr><tr >
         <td><table >
             <tr>
                 <td>WebSite</a></td>
             </tr>
         </table></td>
     </tr>
 </table>

Note: With the above html content ASP.NET engine automatically adds few client side script along like onmouseover=”Menu_HoverStatic(this)” onmouseout=”Menu_Unhover(this)” onkeyup=”Menu_Key(this)” id=”customeMenun0″ with rendered menu items. Which helps the developer to handel the client side events.

ASP.NET 4 Hosting - ASPHostPortal :: Cannot access localhost on Vista when debugging local ASP.NET Applications

clock January 31, 2011 07:12 by author Jervis

If you are trying to debug ASP.NET applications on Vista you might run into the following problem:

localhost is not accessible through your browser and the error that is displayed is "Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage".

The problem has to do with the fact that there are 2 entries for local host in the hosts file ([Windows directory]\System32\drivers\etc\hosts).

One for ipv4 and one for ipv6.

Example:

127.0.0.1 localhost
::1 localhost

To solve the problem you can remark one of them. The example below remarks the ipv6 entry.

127.0.0.1 localhost
# Causes problems when using localhost ->
#::1 localhost

Note that you might not be able to modify the hosts file even if you are running as an administrator.

The following Microsoft KB explains how to change the hosts file:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;923947

Hope this helps...

Cheap ASP.NET 4.5 Hosting

We’re a company that works differently to most. Value is what we output and help our customers achieve, not how much money we put in the bank. It’s not because we are altruistic. It’s based on an even simpler principle. "Do good things, and good things will come to you".

Success for us is something that is continually experienced, not something that is reached. For us it is all about the experience – more than the journey. Life is a continual experience. We see the Internet as being an incredible amplifier to the experience of life for all of us. It can help humanity come together to explode in knowledge exploration and discussion. It is continual enlightenment of new ideas, experiences, and passions
